Why Getting Your Bra Size Right Matters

An ill-fitting bra is one of the most common wardrobe problems – and most women are wearing the wrong size without even knowing it. The right fit means all-day comfort, better posture, and clothes that look and feel their best. This guide walks you through exactly how to measure yourself at home in just a few minutes.

What You'll Need

  • A soft measuring tape
  • A mirror
  • A well-fitting (non-padded) bra, or measure without one

Step 1: Measure Your Band Size

Wrap the measuring tape snugly around your ribcage, directly under your bust. Keep the tape parallel to the floor and breathe normally. Round to the nearest whole number.

  • If the number is even, that is your band size (e.g. 34).
  • If the number is odd, add 1 to get your band size (e.g. 33 → 34).

Step 2: Measure Your Bust Size

Wrap the tape loosely around the fullest part of your chest, keeping it parallel to the floor. Do not pull it tight – you want a comfortable, relaxed measurement. Round to the nearest whole number.

Step 3: Calculate Your Cup Size

Subtract your band measurement from your bust measurement. The difference tells you your cup size:

  • 0–½ inch = AA
  • 1 inch = A
  • 2 inches = B
  • 3 inches = C
  • 4 inches = D
  • 5 inches = DD / E

Example: Band = 34 inches, Bust = 37 inches → Difference = 3 → Cup = C → Bra size: 34C

How to Check the Fit

Once you have your size, put on a bra and do a quick fit check:

  • Band: Should sit level all the way around. You should be able to slide two fingers underneath – no more, no less.
  • Cups: Your breast tissue should sit fully inside the cup with no spillage or gaps.
  • Straps: Should stay in place without digging in. If they slip, tighten them slightly.
  • Centre gore: The piece between the cups should lie flat against your sternum.

Sister Sizes – When Your Exact Size Is Unavailable

Every bra size has sister sizes that offer the same cup volume with a different band. If your size is out of stock, try going one band size up and one cup size down (or vice versa):

  • 34C → 36B or 32D
  • 36D → 38C or 34DD

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I remeasure?

Remeasure every 6–12 months, or any time your weight changes significantly, after pregnancy, or if your current bras start feeling different.

My band feels right but the cups gap – what do I do?

Try going down one cup size. Cup fit is affected by the style of the bra as well as the size, so it is worth trying a few different styles.

Can I measure myself without a bra on?

Yes – measuring without a bra (or in a non-padded bra) gives the most accurate result.
